Sights & Sounds
of North End Road Market
Background
North
End Road Market has been in existence since the 1880s. This busy local
market survives to this day by attracting passers by and locals alike, all
eager to take a bargain home. Fresh fruit and veg make up the bulk of the
stalls, but you can also get toiletries, clothes, batteries and various bits
for the home. The market owes its popularity to the fact that there's nowhere
else in Fulham to pick up cheap haberdashery and food.
The Project
In the Autumn of 2005 young people from the Hammersmith
& Fulham Young Carers Project joined digital:works in
creating Hustle & Bustle.
Hustle and Bustle is a booklet of photographs and quotes and an audio documentary of interviews with local people and stall holders on North End Road Market. The young people began by visiting the market and completed a history trail of the area. They then developed questions to ask a variety of people, conducted the interviews and took photographs.
The Book & Documentary
The book and accompanying CD is available free from the Hammersmith & Fulham
Young Carers Project by emailing them

Or you can download a PDF copy of the book or listen to the audio documentary on this site.
Why not visit the market yourself, grab a bargain and make a day of it by going on the history trail which was developed by the Hammersmith & Fulham Urban Studies Centre.
